BHBCF is a Florida Non-Profit Corporation operating as an in person home educational program serving Step Up For Students Scholarship families and the general public homeschooling families. We provide enrichment activities and curated field trips that supplement parent-directed instruction and open to all races, non-discriminating.

From The Founder

From The Founder

BHBCF was founded by Keonnah Lee Baker, a homeschooling mother of two whose daughter has auditory processing disorder. The experience that first drew her into home education. After moving her family from Cincinnati, Ohio to South Florida and finding no in-person Black homeschool community in Broward County, she built one. What began as a 

BHBCF was founded by Keonnah Lee Baker, a homeschooling mother of two whose daughter has auditory processing disorder. The experience that first drew her into home education. After moving her family from Cincinnati, Ohio to South Florida and finding no in-person Black homeschool community in Broward County, she built one. What began as a Facebook group has grown into a community of 90+ families. By profession, Keonnah is a Florida licensed real estate broker who manages high-ticket transactions and gives a portion of  commission back to local heroes;  first responders, teachers, military, and community service workers  toward their closing costs. BHBCF is the natural next chapter of a lifetime practice of giving and leading.

Field Trips

Field trips occur two Fridays per month. Per trip fee covers admission, materials and group transportation where applicable. Parent attendance required at this time.

Local Museum/ Cultural Site

$65

Once a month, we visit Broward County's most meaningful museums and cultural sites, places where Black history, art, and heritage come alive. Each trip pairs a guided experience with a pre-trip activity at our learning center and a follow-up reflection your child can bring home to their parent-led curriculum.

Nature & Environmental

$35

Once a month, we head outdoors to Broward and South Florida's nature preserves, parks, and sanctuaries. Naturalist-led programming, nature journaling, and native-species identification turn each trip into real science, and a chance for our children to fall in love with the natural world they call home.

Everglades & Wildlife

Once a semester, we take students into the Everglades for a deeper, longer outing into one of the world's most extraordinary ecosystems. Airboat or tram tours, ranger-led programming, and the cultural and natural history of South Florida's wetlands make this one of the most memorable trips of the year.

Performing Arts

Once a semester, we take students to live theater, dance, and music performances across South Florida,  including the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center, and the Sandrell Rivers Theater. Pre-show study guides and post-show discussions turn each performance into rich, lasting learning.

Black Owned farm or Business

$55

Once a semester, we visit Black-owned farms, businesses, and entrepreneurs in Broward and surrounding counties. Children meet the people behind the work, see how vision becomes operation, and connect directly to our Entrepreneurship & Pitch Lab and Garden Science programming.

Historic & Civic

$55

Once a semester, we explore local Broward County history and civic life through guided tours, primary-source viewing, and conversations with civic leaders. Stops include Old Fort Lauderdale Village & Museum, Stranahan House, and the Broward County Government Center,  making the abstract idea of "government" feel concrete and close to home.

HBCU & College Campus Day

$150

Once a year, we take high school students (and curious younger siblings) on a visit day to a historically Black college or university , including FAMU, Bethune-Cookman, FIU, and Broward College. Campus tours, admissions sessions, financial aid info, and student panels make college feel close, possible, and real.

Multi-Day Educational Trip

$800

Once a year, we host a multi-day educational trip that takes our families beyond Broward County for an immersive, parent-attended journey. Past destinations include St. Augustine, Tallahassee, and an Atlanta civil rights tour. Lodging, group meals, and all programming are included. Space is limited; early registration is essential.

Special Events & Drop-In

Park Day non member

$5

unstructured time for our children to play together at a Broward County park while their parents talk, breathe, and feel the relief of being in a community of other Black homeschool families. Free for enrolled families; non-members welcome at a small drop-in rate.

Black history Month Family Event

$65

Every February, BHBCF families come together for a full-day Black History Month celebration — a hands-on, multigenerational event with cultural performances, learning stations, food, art, and the deep joy of doing this work together. Open to enrolled families and the wider community.

Juneteenth Celebration

Our Juneteenth Celebration marks June 19th — the day enslaved Black Americans in Texas learned they were free — with a community gathering that honors the past and celebrates the future our children are growing into. Expect food, music, storytelling, family games, and the kind of joyful togetherness this day was made for.

Year-End Showcase & Recognition

Our Year-End Showcase & Recognition closes our program year with a full-family celebration: student performances, exhibits of work, and recognition of every child, instructor, volunteer, and family who made our community what it became this year. The kind of evening you'll be glad you didn't miss.

Activity Sessions & Workshops

Activities meet weekly for the duration listed. Drop-In rate also available where space permits. Annual registration required and starting 2027-2028 school year

Yoga & Mindfulness

$400, Drop in rate $55

  1. 8 sessions; grade K-12- pending Step Up for Students approval
  2. Our Yoga & Mindfulness series gives students ages 5 and up the tools to move with awareness, breathe through hard moments, and notice the world around them. Through age-appropriate poses, breathwork, guided rest, and short mindfulness practices, children build focus, emotional regulation, and a kinder relationship with themselves. Mats provided; no prior experience needed.

Entrepreneurship & Pitch Lab

$300, Drop in rate $55

  1. 6 sessions; grade 9-12- pending Step Up for Students approval
  2. Entrepreneurship & Pitch Lab gives high school students the tools, mentorship, and runway to turn a real idea into a small business they can launch. Over six weeks, students develop a business concept, build a simple plan and brand, and pitch to a panel of local Black-owned business leaders at the end of the series.

Garden Science & Outdoor Learning

$475, Drop in rate $65

  1. 8 Sessions; grade K-12- pending Step Up for Students approval
  2. Garden Science & Outdoor Learning meets in our outdoor classroom and learning garden, where students dig, plant, observe, and harvest their way through real science. Across eight weeks, your child will explore plant biology, soil, pollinators, and South Florida ecosystems — connecting to the deep agricultural traditions of the African and Caribbean diaspora through every season we grow together.

Game Day & Strategy Club

$375, Drop in rate $55

  1. 8 Sessions; grade K-12- pending Step Up for Students approval
  2. Game Day & Strategy Club is the joyful side of learning. Across eight weeks, students play and master a curated set of board games, strategy games, chess, and cooperative challenges that build critical thinking, social skills, and the kind of friendships that come from sitting across a table from someone for an hour. Open to all ages; drop-in welcome where space allows.
